INSTRUMENTATION:
Bass Xylophone, Alto Xylophone, Soprano Xylophone, Alto Metallophone, Soprano Metallophone, Djembe (or similar), Impact Drums, Maracas/Axatse.
PROGRAM NOTES:
This piece is centered around a general atmosphere of celebration. Particularly, the composer wrote this as a celebration of the coming of spring, where the trees begin to sprout their green leaves in the eastern U.S. It was composed for his 4th and 5th grade students to perform on their annual music program.
PERFORMANCE NOTES:
Musically, Celebration features simple melodies and accompaniments in the key of C, and an exciting drum solo toward the middle. If djembes are unavailable to the performer, tubano drums would be a perfect alternative. e Maracas part could be played either by maracas or an axatse (an African gourd instrument adorned with a net of small sea shells) or both. The term “impact drum” refers to any type of drum that makes a low "thud" sound; the composer uses a kick drum turned on its side and a low tom for these parts.
