INSTRUMENTATION: 4.3 octave marimba
This piece is meant to evoke the scenery of a lush forest by the side of a creek or small river. The term riparian refers to an ecosystem adjacent to flowing water, where in the eastern United States, plants such eastern hemlock, rhododendron, and others are known to grow. The “sketches” in this piece are from various riparian environments where the composer has hiked over the years, including New River Gorge National Park and Cathedral State Park in West Virginia, Grayson Lake State Park in Kentucky, and Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. The piece straddles contemplative and playful moods as we descend into the riparian forest and consider its vitality, history and natural splendor. Technically, the piece makes use of lateral permutations at multiple interval sizes and heavily utilizes the A minor pentatonic scale. Players can expect a workout in 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths as well as dynamic restraint.
