DIFFICULTY: Intermediate-Advanced
INSTRUMENTATION: Vibraphone, Marimba, Electric Guitar, Sand Blocks/Cymbal Rack, Granite Blocks, Cabasa/Shaker, Triangle/Claves, Bass Guitar, and Drum Set.
PROGRAM NOTES: The Craftsman is meant to evoke the spirit of a wood worker in the midst of a build. The piece begins with a handful of disparate, seemingly unconnected musical motifs that are gradually shaped to fit better together throughout. The music captures many aspects of a craftsman's workshop, build process, and creative ethic. Passages of 7/8 and 4/4 are gradually shaped and molded by brief odd meter phrases reminiscent of SAE tools and bits (3/8, 5/8, 7/8, etc.). Listeners of the piece will encounter the sounds of sanding, hammering, chiseling, and will also hear elements of rock music (evoked by the composer's propensity for listening to it while working on a build), hence the inclusion of electric guitar, bass guitar, and drumset. The general atmosphere of excitement permeating the piece's triumphant final sections is intended to describe the composer's feeling of being fully satisfied and mentally stimulated by working with one's hands to create something that will stand the test of time. Although composed for a relatively small ensemble, players will need to possess a strong sense of pulse and must be able to handily navigate complex time signature changes.
