THREE HIKES IN THE YEW MOUNTAINS is a three-movement suite for large percussion ensemble. Each movement chronicles a hike in the Yew Mountains of West Virginia, an ecologically rich and precious area within the Monongahela National Forest. This work is for mature players who can deftly navigate complex time signature changes, brisk mallet runs, and can display technical finesse on all the listed instrumentation.
MOVEMENT II: RED SPRUCE KNOB
DIFFICULTY: Medium-Advanced
INSTRUMENTATION: Glockenspiel, Chimes, Vibraphones 1-2, Marimbas 1-2, Timpani (5), Concert Snare Drum, Concert Bass Drum, Concert Toms/Granite Blocks/Log Drum, Cymbal Rack, Triangle/Tam-Tam, Ocean Drum/Maracas/Rainstick
PROGRAM NOTES: Red Spruce Knob is the highest point in the Yew Mountains, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the state of West Virginia. The mountain’s dense “cap” of red spruce forest and temperate rainforest climate give it a look and feel more similar to places in the United States’ Pacific Northwest than in the rest of Appalachia. The hike to the summit is a calm but steady climb through a forest increasingly dense with spruce and other relict plants such as painted trillium. Once hikers reach the top, they find themselves a mystical forest much like from a fantasy epic. As one contemplates the history and ecology of the area, the ruins of an old firetower tell stories over a century old. Listeners may note familiar motifs introduced in Movement 1, for Red Spruce Knob and Black Mountain share many aesthetic similarities.
