THREE HIKES IN THE YEW MOUNTAINS is a three-movement suite for large percussion ensemble. Each movement chronicles a hike in the Yew Mountains of West Virginia, an ecologically rich and precious area within the Monongahela National Forest. This work is for mature players who can deftly navigate complex time signature changes, brisk mallet runs, and can display technical finesse on all the listed instrumentation.
MOVEMENT III: THE HALL OF KINGS
DIFFICULTY: Advanced
INSTRUMENTATION: Glockenspiel, Chimes, Vibraphones 1-2, Marimbas 1-2, Timpani (5), Concert Snare Drum, Concert Bass Drum, Concert Toms/Granite Blocks/Log Drum, Cymbal Rack, Triangle/Tam-Tam, Ocean Drum/Rainstick
PROGRAM NOTES: Off the Cranberry Wilderness’ Big Beechy Trail on Sugar Creek Mountain, a short hike through mixed forest leads to an area of incredible scenery known colloquially as the “Hall of Kings.” It is a towering old-growth stand of red spruce trees, some of the tallest in the Yew Mountains, surrounded by magnificent boulders carpeted in lush green mosses. When stepping into this forested zone, one feels as if they have entered a sacred palace of the wilderness; an ancient palace imbued with nature's magic. Also in this area is an extremely thick garden of rhododendron, West Virginia's state flower. This “laurel brake” is reminiscent of the many impediments faced by some of the area’s first explorers, many of whom became lost in these thickets, never be heard from again.
